Bangkok, 3 November 2010 - Philippine Ambassador to Thailand Linglingay F. Lacanlale visited the Province of Phitsanulok in lower northern Thailand on October 29 to 31. Ambassador Lacanlale made the visit upon the official invitation of Mr. Nakorn Machim, Member of the Thai Parliament representing Constituency 2 of the Province of Phitsanulok. She was accompanied by a consular team composed of First Secretary and Consul General Edgar Badajos, Consular Assistants Asela Luna-Manggis and Lilibeth Rebustillo, and Welfare Officer Mr. Hector Cruz, Jr.
Ambassador Lacanlale and the consular team’s first day in Phitsanulok consisted of a brief meeting with the Governor of the province upon their arrival at the airport and an overnight stay at, and tour in the morning of the next day of, Phu Hin Rung Kha, Thailand’s 48th National Park. During the welcome program, Mr. Nakorn and park officials explained that besides being a major watershed for the province, the mountains of Phu Hin Rung Kha were once the stronghold of the communists who threatened the political stability of Thailand from 1968 to 1972. In 1982, through a combination of political and military solution, Thai government forces finally defeated the communist insurgents.
In response, Ambassador Lacanlale thanked Mr. Nakorn, the park officials, and the province of Phitsanulok for their hospitality and for giving the estimated 70 to 80 Filipinos who have made the province their second home the opportunity to contribute to the province and Thailand’s economic development and socio-cultural diversity. She also thanked them for patiently explaining the history of the park, noting that the Philippine government has much to learn from the park’s communist past and how the Thai government successfully resolved the insurgency.
In the afternoon of the next day, Ambassador Lacanlale and the consular team met with members of the Filipino community in Phitsanulok. The community thanked the Ambassador for visiting them and noted that Ambassador Lacanlale is the first Philippine Ambassador to visit the Filipino community in Phitsanulok.
During her meeting with the community, Ambassador Lacanlale discussed recent changes in Thai law affecting foreign workers, specifically foreign teachers, in Thailand. She urged the members of the community, particularly those working as teachers, to continually re-tool themselves to remain relevant and competitive. Mr. Machim, who graciously accepted the Ambassador’s invitation to join her in the meeting, gladly replied to queries about work permits and immigration-related concerns. Mr. Nakorn assured the community of his readiness to assist them.
While the Ambassador’s meeting with the community was on-going, the consular team rendered passport services, legalization of documents and on-site issuance of overseas employment documents.
On the third and last day of their visit, Ambassador Lacanlale and the consular team were taken on a quick tour of the ruins of the old Kingdom of Sukhothai in the nearby province of Sukhothai. The old Kingdom of Sukhothai is the first national capital of Thailand.
