Remarks by
H.E. Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand
At the Webster University Thailand’s “Prime Minister’s Scholarship 2010” Award Ceremony
Professor Ratish Thakur,
Rector of Webster University Thailand, Secretary-General of the Civil Service Commission,
Charge d’Affaires of the US Embassy, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen,
1. I am pleased and honoured to be here to award this year’s “Webster University Thailand – Prime Minister’s Scholarship” for Thai students. I also attended the announcement ceremony of the scholarships last year, and I thank Webster for its continuous generosity in granting the scholarships this year, and for the years ahead. Indeed, Webster contributes to quality education in Thailand, which is a primary focus of the Government, as well as educating students from around the world about Thailand. Webster is a multi-cultural and global university with campuses worldwide, so it is a good example of how innovative and resourceful educational institutions can become.
2. In today’s globalised world, with greater connectivity and economic integration, it is indeed necessary that students have the opportunity to expand their skills and knowledge to excel in their fields of study and in the global context. Webster provides this opportunity for students to “ride the wave of globalisation”, as it highlights the importance of international education and understanding.
3. I have often said that the most worthwhile investment is investment in people. This is why the Government is implementing a series of educational reform. In the last year and a half, the Government has invested substantially to provide 15 years of free education and improve primary school education and child-care centres all over the country. The quality of education in schools is also being upgraded, so that it can keep up with the changes that are taking place globally. We also prioritise equally academic and life skills, as well as on access to education, so that students can prepare themselves to enter the workforce and become good citizens who will learn to live with one another in a harmonious and democratic society.
4. I wish to thank Webster University Thailand for contributing to this endeavour. The scholarships granted this year will give the Thai students a wider perspective towards the world. Webster demonstrates the spirit of “global friendship”, and as
it provides international education in Thailand, it enhances the special relationship between the people of Thailand and the world.
5. On behalf of the Royal Thai Government, thank you for your contribution to Thailand, and congratulations to all the recipients. Sawasdee Krub.
