Thailand Educators Network (TEN): Educational changes taking place in Bangkok

Dr Jamie Wallin, Associate Dean of Education, Rangsit University will talk about the Bangkok Government (BMA) and what its Department of Education is doing to transform one-language (Thai) schools into two-language schools.

Almost 30 primary schools have already been converted - the majority into Thai/English schools, and the remainder into Thai/Chinese schools.

The Bangkok Metropolitan government's Department of Education (separate from the Thai Ministry of Education) is discovering that by converting the local schools into bilingual schools that many parents can now enroll their child into a neighborhood school. This means, of course, less commuting and the tuition is free.

Dr Jamie will discuss the role of the foreign teacher, the terms of employment including salary and benefits and will show slides of some typical classrooms.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Schools Department has openings for native speakers of English (and of native speakers of Chinese) who have qualifications in core subjects (Math/Science/English) as well as in Art, Music and Physical Education.

Do you know anyone who would like to teach in the City of Angels? If so, come along and learn more…

Dr Jamie has worked in education all of his adult life, he has worked in Canada as a junior high school teacher, a laboratory school principal, university lecturer, a college president, and an international consultant in India and Indonesia. For the past nine years, he has lived and worked in Thailand.

Thailand Educators Network (TEN) starts at 18:00; Dr Jamie will start his talk at about 18:40. Entrance is 400 Baht for non-members and 300 Baht for members including one drink and snacks.

At the Roadhouse Barbecue, Surawong at Rama IV. For more information, call Dr Tim Cornwall on 081-834-8982, or email using the link below.
