Australia's Swinburne launches new degree in Vietnam

On 20 August, representatives from Melbourne’s Swinburne University of Technology will be in Vietnam to launch a new business degree with Ho Chi Minh City Open University (HCMCOU).

The Master of Commerce (Human Resource Management) will be taught at HCMCOU by Swinburne staff and will complement the existing programs currently offered by the two universities.

In December 2009, Swinburne signed a Collaborative Articulation Program agreement with HCMOU. Under the partnership, Vietnamese students complete two years of an undergraduate program at HCMCOU and continue their studies for a further two years at Swinburne to obtain two qualifications.

According to Swinburne’s Faculty of Business and Enterprise Acting Associate Dean (International) Ian McCormick, HCMCOU's entrepreneurial spirit is a perfect match for Swinburne's business offerings.

“Swinburne has been running business programs in Vietnam for 13 years now and we are seeing a growing demand for softer skills, such as human resource management,” McCormick said.

“We are pleased to be offering this prestigious program with HCMCOU and trust that it complements the social and economic growth of the nation.”

McCormick said this agreement represents a significant advancement of Swinburne's activities in Vietnam.

“Partnerships such as that with HCMCOU provide more Vietnamese students with the opportunity to experience an Australian education system without having to leave Vietnam,” he said.

Swinburne’s program director Richard Ballantyne will be in Ho Chi Minh City for the launch.

Swinburne has had an active presence in Vietnam since 1993 and more than 4,000 Vietnamese people have undertaken Swinburne programs. Since then, the university has developed partnerships with a number of Vietnamese institutions including Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture and the National Economics University.

“We have a long relationship with Vietnam. The many Vietnamese students that choose to study at Swinburne in Australia join our community of nearly 30,000 students who come from over 100 countries,” McCormick said.

The university is best known for its involvement with popular Vietnamese game show Way to Olympia Peak, where high school students compete to win a $US35,000 stipend sponsored by LG Electronics and a full or half scholarship to study their course of choice at Swinburne.

Swinburne also maintains strong government links in Vietnam, particularly with the Ministry of Education and Training, Ministry of Planning and Investment and the Ministry of Trade.
