Phitsanulok Provincial Flower

In Thailand every province has a symbolic flower emblem. The provincial flower of Phitsanulok is the Yellow Flamboyant flower. This flower is native to Phitsanulok (Peltophorum pterocarpum).

This striking yellow flower is also known as the Yellow Flame Tree, Yellow Poinciana and Radhachura. This plant is actually a flower deciduous tree which grows to around 20 metres tall with a wide trunk and long leaves. The Yellow Flambouyant flower grows all over Phitsanulok Flowers province and is often cultivated by locals to grow in their gardens. Typically the tree is grown indoors from a seedling and carefully pruned and groomed to grow outwards. At around two years of age the tree is taken outside where enthusiasts will grow it in their gardens and orchards for aesthetic purposes.

This tree will flower and produce fruit, the first of which is a pod. These large pods can be upwards of 15 CM and contain four seeds. The pods themselves are often dried and used as indoor decoration, or just and interesting object to admire in the home.

This tree is grown in many countries in the world, but predominantly in Asia. As well as Thailand this can often be found in India, Sri Lanka and Nepal. This species of tree can also be found growing in the Americas, particularly in Hawaii.

Peltophorum pterocarpum produces an abundance of yellow flowers which grow outwards in an umbrella like fashion. The flowers are fragrant and gave crinkly petals. The tree grows well in shade and also in strong sun light, it is a robust tree its seeds are propogated primarily by birds.

The flowers of this tree chosen as the flower of Phitsanulok due to the color, yellow. Yellow is a highly symbolic color in Thailand since it represents the Thai Royal Family and also the religion Buddhism. Buddha himself was thought to adorn a yellow robe.
