A Record-Breaking Six Million TOEIC Tests Were Administered in 2010

PRINCETON, NJ--(Marketwire - January 25, 2011) - For the second year in a row, Educational Testing Service (ETS) and its TOEIC®Program had a record-breaking year with more score users and test takers than ever before. In 2010, more than six million TOEIC tests were administered worldwide, establishing the TOEIC Program as the largest and most widely used English-language assessment for the workplace.

"Organizations worldwide are expressing the need to set English language standards in the workplace, and we have been able to meet that need by offering a reliable and flexible testing program for all skill levels," said David Hunt, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of ETS's Global Division. "With more than 10,000 organizations in 120 countries using the TOEIC test to make important decisions relative to their workplace, it is no surprise that we are seeing significant volume growth two years in a row."

ETS and its broad network of ETS Preferred offices attribute the overall volume growth in 2010 to the increase in businesses, government agencies and organizations using the TOEIC tests. These include Eli Lilly, CAMCO, the University of Macau, Vietnam Air Navigation Services Corp., the G20 Summit in Korea, ISU 2011 Four Continents Figure Skating Championships in Taiwan, the Shanghai World Expo in China and the 2014 World Cup volunteers in Brazil's state of Minas Gerais.

"The concept of the TOEIC test was first conceived in Japan more than 30 years ago," says Takayuki Murofushi, President of the Institute for International Business Communication (IIBC), ETS's representative in Japan. "Knowing that only 3,000 people took the very first test in 1979, I am so thrilled with the fact that the TOEIC test has become a global standard in the English-language assessment."

Continuously striving to have a positive impact in the area of English education, the TOEIC Program hosted 19 Propell™ Teacher Workshops for the TOEIC tests in seven countries during 2010. These workshops were attended by more than 600 trainees who had the opportunity to exchange ideas and learn about new language teaching tools and strategies to help improve learning.
