2011/02/17 22:49:02 Taipei, Feb. 17 (CNA) The government is aiming to increase the number of foreign students in Taiwan to 100,000 in the coming five years as part of its strategy to develop the country's tertiary education industry, an education official said Thursday.
Education Minister Wu Ching-ji said after his return from a visit to Thailand at the head of an education delegation to the first Taiwan-Thailand education seminar Feb. 9-16 that the education ministries on each side signed 38 cooperation agreements during the seminar.
Thailand's Education Ministry agreed to provide scholarships for students seeking to pursue doctoral degrees in Taiwan. These students will also be given tuition-free treatment by Taiwan's government.
Taiwanese higher education is sought after in Thailand, especially in the fields of technical and vocational education, according to Wu.
Currently, approximately 43,000 foreigners are studying in Taiwanese universities.
Wu said his ministry seeks to raise the percentage of foreign students in Taiwanese universities to 6 percent, up from the current 3.3 percent.
