Hanoi wants to raise fees at public schools

Family incomes rule for fixing school fees
PM sets school fees for next five years
International schools set sky-high tuition fees

According to the plan, school fees at nursery schools in the inner city will be 165,000 dong ($8.6) a month and 30,000 or 50,000 dong per month at suburban nursery schools, depending on the parents’ occupation (farmers or not). The fees will be 175,000 dong, 35,000 or 70,000 dong for kindergartens, respectively.

For primary schools, the fees will be 100,000 dong, 30,000 or 50,000 dong and 120,000, 35,000 or 55,000 dong for junior secondary schools.

The plan will be implemented if it is approved by the Hanoi People’s Council.

The council agreed to adjust school fees but disagreed with the plan. It asked the Hanoi People’s Committee to make clear the basis for the change.

The plan was designed by the Hanoi Department of Education and Training in mid-2009k, and it is scheduled for implementation in late 2010.

This plan will be considered at the Hanoi People’s Council session next week (July 13-17).
