Dozens of teachers and students die in Burma boat capsizing

Several dozen students and two teachers died when a motor boat capsized on Wednesday morning near Laputta Township in the Irrawaddy Delta due to overloading, according to witness.

The boat was carrying some 80 people—most of them middle school students from several villages in Laputta Township—to a local student conference in a village called Mie Chaung Ein.

Local residents said the boat sank due to overloading.

“We have retrieved 36 bodies so far. Two are teachers and the rest are students. The rescue team is still searching for victims,” said a witness speaking anonymously.

A police official from Laputta Township police station confirmed the sinking but gave no details about casualties so far.
