Baan Sop Muay Primary School, the nursery class takes place in the computer room

Project Description

Sop Muay Nursery School is located in Sop Muay village, in Mae Sam Lap district, Mae Hong Son Province, North-West Thailand. This community is rather difficult to contact and reach, since they only have limited access to electricity and telephones and the road leading to the village is in bad condition. The school is located right on the border to Karen State (Burma). Two rivers are nearby, the Salwin and the Muay. The school is a Thai government school but most children are from the Karen minority – some parents are from Karen State within Burma. The Thai government pays for the nursery teacher and provides milk for the children; the community has contributed with whatever they could in the past. Since March 2008 the community has been running a nursery school for children aged 2-5 years in the computer room of the primary school, which is neither suitable nor available all the time.

Child’s Dream plans to build a one-storey building with two rooms (one will be a teacher’s sleeping room) and two toilets for the nursery school children. Teaching them in the computer room of the primary school is no longer sustainable. The community agreed to provide stones, sand and wood and to help leveling the land with free labor. We will buy construction material from Thong Chai construction material shop in Mae Sariang and have it transported to Sop Muay School by truck and boat. A professional contractor will build the school with his team.

The construction work is planned from June to September 2010.
